What does the forecast tell us?

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the Colorado State University (CSU) have predicted a comparatively below-normal Atlantic hurricane season because of the El Nino conditions. But if there is one thing all the meteorologists are stressing on, it is the fact that it does not take a hundred hurricanes to cause damage, but just one major one instead.

So, even though the predictions are favourable, it is important to prepare for the worst.

What does the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast say?

According to officials at NOAA, the Atlantic Hurricane forecast of 2026 has predicted around

  • 08-14 named storms,
  • 03 to 06 hurricanes
  • 01 to 03 major hurricanes (category 3 or stronger)

There is also a 55% chance of a below-average season, a 35% chance of an almost average season but also a 10% chance of an above-average season.

Why will this year be quieter in comparison?

The biggest reason behind this forecast that predicts a lower or below-average season in the US is because of the El Nino conditions that arrived last year in the Pacific Ocean.

El Nino is a condition which increases the wind shear from the Atlantic Ocean so it becomes very difficult for storms to either form or strengthen into hurricanes.

So essentially, the condition that made last year’s winters so terrible is also the same one that might make this year’s hurricane season more bearable. Ironic!

The MET department has mentioned that even though El Nino will make it difficult for hurricanes to form, they might still form because of other factors such as:

  • Climate changes
  • Warmer than average atlantic ocean temperature
  • Weak trade winds
  • Rising ocean heat content

So while there may not be many storms, if hurricanes do form – they can be extremely destructive.

States at the highest risk during the Hurricane Season:

Nothing can be extremely certain with nature because it is extremely unpredictable, but experts have reviewed and predicted these few states to be hit the worst:

Florida

As everyone knows, Florida is one of the most hurricane-prone states in the US and it is once again at a high risk state during this hurricane season of 2026 as well.

It is a very vulnerable state majorly because of its geography.

  • It is surrounded by warm water on three sides
  • It is exposed to the Atlantic and the Gulf storms
  • It has a large coastal population so heat generation is automatically more

The areas that are in the red zone specifically are Tampa Bay, the Florida Panhandle, South Florida and the Atlantic coast. That is why a lot of experts are warning to keep an eye out for any homegrown storms near the Gulf.

Texas:

Just like Florida, Texas is also one of the most hurricane hit states because of its long Gulf coast coastline. There is a huge risk of storm surge flooding, inland rainfall flooding and power outages in Texas

Places like Houston, Galveston, Corpus Christi and Beaumont are among the top and most vulnerable areas within the state.

Texas has large industrial infrastructure and a very dense coastal population so even the smallest of hurricanes have the ability to cause billions of damages.

Louisiana

A state which is extremely vulnerable to hurricanes because of:

  • Its low lying geography
  • The constant coastal erosion
  • Wetland loss

Louisiana is known to be yet another sensitive state that succumbs to the damages brought by, by hurricanes.

New Orleans will continue to face concerns over the levee pressure and slow moving storms will continue to be a threat because of the damage they can cause due to heavy rainfalls.

North and South Carolina

These two states keep getting hit by hurricanes even though they are slightly overlooked.

The outer banks of North Carolina face multiple risks because of inland flooding due to the hurricanes and South Carolina is hit due to the warm Atlantic waters.

Hurricanes are known to cause storm surges, inland flooding, tourism disruption and coastal erosion in both states.

Does “below average” mean “safe”?

No. below average does not automatically mean you will be safe this year or there will not be any hurricanes and hence the damage will be less.

History has shown time and again that even quiet seasons can have devastating effects. Hurricane Andrew struck during a below-average season in 1992 so it is essential to be careful, prepared and ready for the worst outcomes.

Rapid intensification because of warm ocean temperatures can be harmful along with flooding because of heavy rainfalls.

Tips to be prepared for this Hurricane Season:

  • Build an emergency kit for yourself and your family
  • Store drinking water and food that is non-perishable
  • Charge all backup batteries and power banks
  • Review all your evacuation routes
  • Check flood insurance coverage
  • Secure all important documents
  • Prepare for power outages so keep cash handy

The 2026 hurricane season and its forecast might be below average but the threat towards coastal states is still serious because of the exposure it has to the oceans.

The residents should not focus on the storm predictions and take it “easy” but instead prepare for dense rainfall, power shortages and flooding as well.

While the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast suggests a below-average season, it does not eliminate the risk for coastal and vulnerable states. The 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast clearly indicates that preparedness remains the strongest defense against unpredictable weather events. Residents should treat the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Forecast as a reminder to stay alert, informed, and fully prepared for any scenario.
