What is Oktoberfest?

Oktoberfest in 2026 will be held in Munich, Germany and is an annual folk festival that was started in 1810. What began as a royal wedding celebration, has now turned into a global event which attracts multiple tourists from all over.

Six to seven million visitors go see the Oktoberfest and attend a cultural event which combines Bavarian culture with delicious beer, food, carnival rides, live brass bands and colorful parades as well.

If you are someone who loves culture, meeting new people, drinking beer and exploring traditions – then this Oktoberfest in 2026 is the perfect getaway for you.

Oktoberfest 2026 Dates

The official Oktoberfest 2026’s dates are between September 19th, 2026 till October 4th 2026 and it will follow its traditional 16-day festival schedule just like always.

Even though it is called Oktoberfest, most of the celebration actually happens in the month of September. The opening ceremony always starts with the famous keg tapping by Munich’s mayor at noon on the first day of the fest – this marks the start of Oktoberfest in 2026.

You should either visit during the opening weekend or the closing weekend because while these may be busy times, these are also extremely memorable.

Do you need Oktoberfest, Munich’s Tickets?

The biggest misconception about Oktoberfest is that you need to buy Oktoberfest Munich’s tickets in order to just enter the festival. The good news is that you actually do not need any entry tickets.

You can walk on the festival grounds without having to pay an admission or entry fee. Once you have entered though, you will have to pay for certain individual activities or for entertainment purposes.

You will need Oktoberfest Munich’s tickets or advanced reservations for:

  • Reserved tables inside the beer tents
  • VIP packages
  • Guides Oktoberfest tours
  • Carnival rides
  • Special events
  • Concerts and private hospitality experiences

Most of the beer tents do accept walk-in customers when the days are not too busy – but if you go on the weekends or in the evenings, you may require reservations months in advance.

Oktoberfest Beer Tents in 2026

The biggest and the main decision of Oktoberfest in 2026, is choosing which beer tents to visit out of all of them.

Hofbräu-Festzelt

As many would know, this is known to be the most internationally famous test which attracts tourists from literally the entire world.

It will almost always have energetic crowds, live music and the liveliest atmosphere at Oktoberfest of 2026.

Schottenhamel

This is a historic tent which hosts the official opening ceremony where the mayor taps the first keg.

You can only imagine how popular, fun and busy it gets during the opening and the closing ceremonies – so getting a reservation before-hand is the best idea.

Augustiner-Festhalle

A tent at the Oktoberfest 2026 that is known to serve their beer from traditional wooden barrels, this is more than just a tent. It offers the experience of a traditional Bavarian culture which the locals absolutely love.

Hacker-Festzelt

Also known as the “Heaven of the Bavarians” Hacker-Festzelt is known to have a tent filled with beautiful decorations and lively entertainment throughout the festival.

Paulaner Festzelt

It is the most popular amongst the locals at the out of all the Oktoberfests beer tents in 2026.

Paulaner offers its tourists the most delicious food, a lot of space for you and your friends to sit comfortably and traditional Bavarian music.

How much does Oktoberfest in 2026 cost?

Budgeting for Oktoberfest in 2026 depends majorly on your travel style, chosen accommodation, purchase style and your future plans afterwards.

Expense Estimated Cost

Snacks €6–€12
Carnival Rides €5–€12

If you are staying for three to four days, you can expect a total budget of around €800–€1,500 which excludes international flights.

How to reserve Beer Tent Tables

Although Oktoberfest Munich tickets are not needed for entry, it is suggested that you reserve your table at different beer tents so that you do not have to wait for hours in a line at Oktoberfest in 2026.

Most of the bookings also include:

  • Reserved seating
  • Meal vouchers
  • Beer vouchers
  • Guaranteed tables during your chosen time slot

What to wear at Oktoberfest?

Traditional Bavarian clothing is not mandatory, but you can always wear it because it is highly encouraged by the locals themselves.

Women wear a Dirndl and men usually wear lederhosen.

Most of the travelers and tourists rent their outfits so they can fully embrace the festival without increasing the weight in their luggage bags.

As for shoes – wear the most comfortable ones because you will be on your feet for most of the day.

Writing an author’s biography is one of the hardest things and, somehow, always an afterthought. We spend a lot of time crafting the literature but very little on our personal branding. But, in many cases, a reader in a bookstore will look at three or four things at best before deciding to purchase your book
