Since ages, the death of a pope has signified more than just a personal loss – but instead a turning point for the Catholic Church, global politics and society. When a pope dies, the Church traditionally enters sede vacante where all the central authority is paused and reset. With the passing of Pope Francis, the Roman Catholic Church enters a very important, strategic and life-changing phase: the election of a new pope.

Every pope has his own legacy that he leaves behind. For Pope Francis, that legacy was shaping the church’s modern identity while keeping  important traditions completely intact. From emphasizing humility and social justice to being inclusive – he was beloved even by non believers because of his thoughts on modernity.

While his death leaves a vacuum in leadership, it also poses a very important question first:

Who will the new Pope in 2026 be?

But before that, let’s understand more context about the process after the death of a pope.

What happens when a Pope dies?

Rooted in tradition and legacies, the process that is followed is centuries old. Immediately after Pope Francis died, the Vatican entered sede vacante which literally means “the seat is vacant” in Latin. The papal apartments get sealed right afterwards and the Church’s day-to-day administration is also handled only on a temporary basis.

Until a new Pope 2026 is elected, no major decisions or reforms are made within the Vatican City. So, all the responsibility of managing the transition and the smaller decisions falls onto senior officials within the Vatican.

How is a New Pope elected?

This is the most critical phase – it will determine how the Vatican and the church will work for the next xyz number of years. This phase of electing the new Pope of 2026 is called the Papal conclave which is held inside the Sistine Chapel.

The voting is done by 120 cardinals under the age of 80 who come from across the world showcasing the global nature of the church. They are chosen by previous popes. It is necessary for 120 cardinals to vote to reduce bias in choosing the pope and to increase transparency while ensuring churches around the world the new Pope 2026 is chosen by the majority.

Fun fact – historically, cardinals were literally locked inside until they elected a pope to streamline and fasten the process.

Just like in a democratic government election, the cardinals vote in secrecy as well. A two-third majority is required for a new Pope to be selected. They submit their devices and surrender their phones before they enter and they have no access to the internet or the news. The goal is to completely eradicate the influence of media and politics.

Sometimes there can also be multiple rounds of voting. And after each round, the Vatican city’s people get to know an update through smoke signals!

  • If its black smoke= no decision has been taken yet.
  • If its white smoke = a new pope has been chosen.

Who will be the next Pope?

Well, technically any baptized Catholic male can be elected as the new Pope in 2026. There are no official candidates though – just prominent figures. They are also called papabili which is Italian for Pope-able. Such figures are observed, closely watched and are chosen after due diligence is done.

Each Pope influences how the church will function and work so the papabili are essentially candidates without even knowing they might be.

The legacy of Pope Francis:

Pope Francis made a very structured and poverty visible shift from traditional and often orthodox beliefs to modernised and inclusive ones. He is also known as one of the most disruptive and defining popes in modern Catholic history. He was the first Pope from Latin America, the first Jesuit pope and the first to also take “Francis” as his name which in his way signalled a reform.

The internet, social media and the Catholic Church News all referred to Pope Francis as deliberately moving away from the image of grandeur, superiority and maintaining a distance from the world. He chose simpler living arrangements instead of the beautiful and grand Apostolic Palace and one could always see him dressed modestly.

He spoke openly about social injustices and advocated strongly for refugees and migrants. According to him, environmental damage impacts poor people the worst and collectively we need to make better decisions that ensure more resources for those who cannot afford them. Pope Francis globalised the Church’s leadership and started more of a dialogue between the world and the church.

What is at stake in the New Election this time?

The new Pope in 2026 will not just continue leading the Church but will also determine which direction it will be led towards. The Vatican does play a role in global diplomacy, so the new Pope in 2026 will be responsible for the Church’s voice in debates like climate change, migration and even inequality as the main issues.

Whoever is elected as the new Pope in 2026 will be inheriting a very complicated and intense landscape. Currently, the church is facing a massive issue of declining church attendance in various European cities. While it is growing, the Church is still criticised for not being modern/open/welcome to various communities so the new Pope in 2026 will have to decide which direction he wants to take the church in.

After a pope like Pope Francis who defined the church’s chapter of reform, humility and acceptance – the main question people are asking is if the new Pope will follow through with the same.

What will happen once the new Pope in 2026 is elected?

Once he accepts the role, he chooses his Papal name because he does not keep his birth name. It’s a symbolic way of reflecting how a Pope would like to be seen as – more often than not, he chooses a name based on a past Pope or a saint that he admires.

For example: Francis was inspired by St. Francis of Assisi who was known for his humility and the importance he put on helping the poor.

As the world watches the white smoke rise from the Sistine Chapel – everyone will ask one question: what kind of Church will he lead?

Writing an author’s biography is one of the hardest things and, somehow, always an afterthought. We spend a lot of time crafting the literature but very little on our personal branding. But, in many cases, a reader in a bookstore will look at three or four things at best before deciding to purchase your book
