A country once called the “Sone ki Chidiya” or the golden bird of the word, it is no hidden fact that the Indian households love gold and it is the one metal that has always had a special place in their hearts.

Indians have traditionally trusted gold more than any other investment type or asset. To the point where today anyone can buy gold instantly with their smartphones and apps like PhonePe, Paytm, Groww and Google Pay – because of which digital gold has become one of the fastest growing investment trends within India.

Key Takeaways:

  • Digital gold lets you invest in gold starting from as little as 1 rupee through apps like Groww, Google Pay, Paytm and PhonePe.
  • Gold prices have surged as people continue to digitally invest in gold within India
  • Unlike gold ETFs and SGB’s, digital gold is still not fully regulated yet.
  • For short term accumulation, one can always go for digital gold. But otherwise, going for ETFs or SGBs for long term investments is a better plan.

What is digital gold?

Digital gold basically allows you to buy gold online without physically storing it on your own in your closets or lockers. So, when you go and buy digital gold, the provider buys actual and real 24k gold on your behalf and stores it securely in insured vaults.

Most of these platforms that offer digital gold investments allow one to buy gold starting from 1 rupee – so even if you are a student, it is easy for you to start investing.

Platforms like PhonePe, Paytm, Groww, Amazon, Jar and Google Pay all offer digital gold investments.

Why did digital gold become so popular in 2026?

According to the World Gold Council, digital gold purchases through UPI’s increased in 2025 and have grown massively in 2026 because of these factors:

Rising gold prices:

Currently, the political and economic environment is extremely unstable and unpredictable – because of which the price of gold has increased and been increasing every now and then.

Gold has now become a “safe haven” for investors in today’s time.

Easy UPI investments:

Technology has made buying gold extremely convenient and easy – it takes less than a minute to invest in gold. You can simply open the app and invest instantly using UPI itself.

Small investment amounts:

If you buy gold jewellery, you need to pay for the making charge above the already extremely priced piece of jewellery, right? Digital gold removes all of that because of which you can start investing from 1 rupee as well.

It is perfect for students, beginner investors and anyone who wants to invest but within a budget.

No storage hassles either:

Because it is “digital” gold, you do not really have to pay for a locker to store it in or be worried about theft or purity concerns because this gold is automatically stored professionally.

How does digital gold work?

The steps to buy your own digital gold are super simple:

  1. You go and choose an app that supports buying digital gold,
  2. You choose how much gold you want to buy,
  3. Pay using UPI, debit card and bank transfers,
  4. The equivalent amount of gold is then credited to your account.

Now based on how much digital gold you have invested in India, your holdings will rise or fall depending on the prices.

There are apps that also allow you to have SIP-style gold investing monthly, buy gift transfers and instant selling options too.

The main question – is it safe?

This is the biggest gold question in 2026.

It is backed by real physical gold that is stored in vaults by professionals – BUT it is not yet regulated directly by the RBI or the SEBI yet – so many people still hesitate a bit before investing in digital gold in India.

That is why if you want to invest in digital gold, always do it on trusted platforms and check their vault + security and storage details carefully. Also avoid treating digital gold as your only investment to be on the safer side.

In 2026, digital gold companies formed their own self-regulatory body called the DPMACI or the Digital Precious Metals Assurance Council of India to be more credible and to assure consumer protection and transparency.

Digital gold vs physical gold: which one is better?

Feature  Digital Gold  Physical Gold
Storage Online vaults Home lockers/banks
Starting investment 1 rupee Much higher
Purity Usually 24k varies
Liquidity Instant online selling Depends on the buyer
Making charges Minimal High
Theft risk Low Higher
Emotional value Low High

If you want to focus more on investments, then digital gold is better and more efficient than jewelry because of safety, but also because of the absence of making charges.

Digital Gold vs Gold ETF vs Sovereign Bonds: Which One is Better?

Investment Type Best For Main Advantage  Main Drawback
Digital Gold Beginners Easy access Limited regulations
Gold ETF Long-term investors SEBI-regulated Requires Demat account
Sovereign Gold Bonds Long-term holding Interest income + tax benefits Lock-in period
Physical Gold Jewelry buyers Tangible assets Storage and making charges

Sovereign Gold Bonds have remained the most consistent, safe and popular choice for investors because of its historic returns. Some SGB investors also saw returns above 300% over years because of rising gold prices.

Taxation of Digital Gold in India in 2026:

Digital gold taxation works similarly to how taxation works on physical gold. It also depends on how long you hold it for.

  • If it is below 3 years then the profits are counted according to your income tax slab.
  • If it is above 3 years then long-term capital gains tax will apply. It also adds indexation benefits.

Moreover, GST can apply during your purchase and delivery charges if  you convert it to physical gold.

What are some risks of Digital Gold investment in India?

It is not regulated by RBI or SEBI yet:

Despite it being so popularly used by investors, it is still not officially regulated financially in India so it might not be the safest option.

Buy-sell Spread

Some platforms have noticeable differences between buying and selling prices so it is not uniformed.

Storage terms:

Certain providers who sell digital gold in India impose a “holding-period” condition or delivery fees.

Who should invest in Digital Gold?

If you are a beginner investor or a student who wants to ensure they have savings but also investments, then digital gold can be for you.

It is also helpful for those who want festival or wedding savings specifically.

But if you are someone who wants long-term profits or high liquidity during market stress, then investing in digital gold should definitely be a huge no.
