But every once in a while – there are a few that catch your eye and keep you seated on your sofa for the next 2 days till you finish binging it. Your boss may even get a message from you informing of your absence the next day because some shows rise about the general algorithm.
The best Netflix shows in May 2026 are already lined up – they are emotionally addictive, have an eye-catching cinematography and direction, are binge-worthy and impossible to ignore because of their storyline. One of the most underrated political dramas, it is gripping, it is realistic and it is strongly written. While the louder shows dominate headlines – this quietly remains Netflix’s most grounded, tense and intelligently written shows. If you are a fan of House of Cards then trust me, this is something you would want to watch for sure. Ker Russell’s lead and the storyline of agents becoming diplomats while being married to each other bring in drama and the right amount of spice.
Running Point:
If you’re someone who enjoys light watches but with a twist of a good, intellectual or sporty storyline – then this will make you heat your popcorn in the microwave. Based on a family of siblings that inherit a basketball team and league from their dad, it is witty, comedic and realistic altogether. It delves into the themes of leadership, betrayal, love, cheating and scandals – and it is easily one of the best netflix shows of May 2026.
Beef
A cultural phenomenon, Beef got famous for its dark and emotionally self-destructive writing of the characters. Season 1 captured themes like rage, anxiety leading to aggressive tendencies and loneliness that only a few could understand – but season 2 expands on these themes with a completely new cast and storyline. Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan bring an emotionally uncomfortable yet psychologically layered energy to the whole show.
The chestnut man
For all you crime thriller lovers – here is a show that has a gripping storyline, twists you would genuinely not see coming and brilliant writing that can be a slow burn for some, but worth it for all. It plays with the concept of a serial killer whose MO is to leave chestnuts at the places of his crime scenes. His victimology is just as confusing as his modus operandi. But with Netflix’s new release this week – it becomes more interesting because season 2 explores politician scandals and connections. Some would even say it is one of the best Netflix shows of May 2026.
Unbelievable
If you are into limited series that are based on true stories, then unbelievable is one such show that will break your heart as you keep watching it. It is about a teen who reports being raped but because her case is complicated, fuelled with trauma and slightly inconsistent – the police instead accuse her of lying. It is an intriguing, sad and hopeful show about justice that comes years later – but it does.
Swapped:
For those who love animated movies just as much as we do, this is a wonderfully directed film about friendship and love. With voiceovers from Michael B. Jordan and Tracy Morgan – it delves deep into a rivalry between two natural sworn enemies and how they go on an adventure of a lifetime which changes how they view the world. Perfect for family night, I would suggest watching this movie with your friends and loved ones too!
Stranger things: Tales from ‘85
Everyone remembers how excitedly we were all sitting for the stranger things finale back in 2025 December. Netflix knew that expanding on this universe might be risky but they did it anyway, and boy are they glad they did. The animated format surprisingly works well because it captures that 80’s vintage vibe and grace while keeping the supernatural adventure active and realistic. It is definitely lighter than the original series but it also connects to that world in an emotional and nostalgic way. For those who fell in love with the Stranger things universe, this would be a good way to rewatch it again but in a different format.
Finally, how do you choose the right show?
Okay so you and I both have spent hours searching for the right show, right? The best way to figure out what to watch is to analyse how you are feeling and then watching something that correlates to it in a positive and fun way.
If I’m feeling happy, I would surely watch swapped or even stranger things just for nostalgia’s purpose.
But if I feel like watching something that will have suspense, thriller and twists – I would choose The Diplomat or The Chestnut Man.
And if you are in the mood for some docuseries, you can never go wrong with unbelievable or any of the Harlan Coben inspired limited shows that Netflix releases almost every year.
